Southampton Cruise Port Overview

Southampton is the UK's busiest cruise port, handling over 2 million passengers each year across four dedicated cruise terminals: City Cruise Terminal, Ocean Cruise Terminal, Mayflower Cruise Terminal, and Horizon Cruise Terminal. The port is located on the south coast of England, about 80 miles from London, and is well served by road, rail, and coach connections.

Getting There by Car

From London and the South East, take the M3 southbound to junction 14, then follow signs to the docks. From the West and South West, take the M27. Journey times are approximately: London (2 hours), Bristol (2 hours), Birmingham (2.5 hours), Manchester (4 hours). All terminals are well signposted from the main road network. Follow signs for 'Cruise Terminal' rather than 'Docks' for the most direct route.

Getting There by Train

Southampton Central station is the main station, served by South Western Railway from London Waterloo. Journey time is 1 hour 20 minutes. Direct services also run from Winchester (15 minutes), Bournemouth (30 minutes), and Portsmouth (50 minutes). On sailing days, free shuttle buses run between Southampton Central station and the cruise terminals. These are clearly signposted at the station.

Cruise Parking Options

Several operators offer cruise parking near Southampton's terminals. Park-and-ride services cost from around £8.99 per day — you park at an off-site car park and are transferred to the terminal by shuttle bus. Meet-and-greet services cost from around £12 per day — you drive directly to the terminal, hand over your keys, and your car is parked for you. We strongly recommend pre-booking, especially during school holidays.

Hotels Near the Cruise Port

If you have a long journey or an early embarkation, staying the night before is a smart idea. Several hotels are within easy reach of the cruise terminals. Some hotels offer park-and-cruise packages that include a night's stay plus parking for the duration of your cruise — these can offer excellent value.

Terminal Tips

Check-in typically opens 4-5 hours before sailing, with boarding starting 2-3 hours before departure. You will need your cruise tickets, passport (for international sailings), and any required health documentation. Luggage can be dropped off at the terminal — it will be delivered to your cabin. Keep a carry-on bag with essentials as cabins may not be ready immediately. The terminals have limited food and drink facilities, so consider eating beforehand or heading straight to the buffet once onboard.
